CLEP Exams
The College-Level Examination Program provides students with the opportunity to earn college credits by
earning qualifying scores on any of 33 examinations. Students who pass the CLEP exams are able to earn college
credits for knowledge they’ve gained through independent study, prior course work, professional development,
on-the-job training, cultural pursuits, or internships.
How CLEP Exams Help
Depending on a college’s policy it is possible for students to earn between 3 and 12 credits towards a
program or degree, helping the student to save time. At just $77 an exam, the student also saves money because the
exam costs a fraction of regular tuition and fees.
Exams can also make the college experience more meaningful and beneficial because it allows students to
skip general introductory courses by demonstrating proficiency in a required area, allowing students to move on to
more advanced classes or reduce the time it will take to graduate.

Why Take a CLEP Exam
CLEP examinations cover material taught in courses that most students take in the first two years of
college. The exams are designed to directly correspond to one-semester courses, and colleges usually grant the same
number of credits to students passing the CLEP examination as they grant to students successfully completing that
course. Each exam is approximately 90 minutes long, and, except for College Composition, is made up primarily of
multiple-choice questions. Some exams do include other types of questions or optional essays.
Getting Started with CLEP Exams
Almost 2,900 colleges and universities accept passing scores in CLEP exams as a successful requirement for
awarding course credit. To make it easier to find out if a school will award credit for a passing score students
should search the CLEP database to make sure the school is listed and then check directly with the college or
university to confirm that it grants credit for the exam.
CLEP Testing Locations
CLEP exams are administered at over 1,400 colleges and universities throughout the year. Once the student
has identified a convenient test center, they should contact that site directly for information about registration,
scheduling, and fees. In addition to the exam fee, most test centers charge a nonrefundable administration
fee.
CLEP exams are a great way for anyone with life or work experiences to earn college credit and jumpstart
their college degree, bypassing general introductory courses that only cover material an experienced individual
would already know. Check it out, find out which tests you can take, and get a head start on your degree
today!
